This is the intro for MTV's Girls of the Playboy Manson. The programme is about Hugh Hefner and his 'girls'. The style is very cut and paste, slow, jerky movements to emphasise possiaby the stupiddity of the 'girls', as all of them are your stereotypical blond bimbos. I think this would be very effective style to use whiting my animation as it ridiculous the celebrity's and belittles them.

I adored the illustrations in the Roald Dahl books when I was little, they were simple black and white line drawings sometimes filled in with crayon effects, yet they had a slightly ridged feel to them. I hate to say it, but the celbrity culture has always intressted me! Im not one of these peeple to buy countless numbers of those magazines exposing every single detail about lest say, victoria beckham walked down a road at this time. But i do enjoy a read once in a while, so I have decided to focus my final idea for The best/worst on celbrity culture...but mainly focusing on their worst habbits, there scandles and unfortunes.

For example Parsi Hilton, she is famous simply beacuse her parents did well and are rich, she herself does nothing, never has and undoubtably never will yet the p[ublic have a fascination with her, she as seen a rebellious wildchild by not behaving on what would be expected for an heiress. She is the MOST searched celbrity on google:

Why would anyone care id Paris Hilton had a bunon on her foot?! It is beyond me.

Channel 4's E4

As part of our background research we have been asked to look at E4, the digital free view channel as this is where our convincing proposals for the best/worst programmes will be shown. E4's target audience are young adults, it is seen as a quirky, funny, stylish channel and up to date Whit current affairs and whats hot and what is certainly not. It knows it audience very well is why the channel is so successful as a spin off to channel 4.

This is the current frount page of their website, constantly being updating showing whats the newest shows around, all in its theme/brand colour of dark purple and chunky fonts.

Considering the last brief which we had which was designing a 10 second annimation using Adobe Aftereffects...and tyhis project following on, I can only assue that we will be designing an indent or short advertisment for our chosen programme about the 'top ten worst/best..'. BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN – END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

Level 2 – Design for Print and Colour Processes

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

This module for me has been a huge learning curve and brought me into year 2 with a bit of a shock - but as a result know I know what is standard is expected of me and the level which I now should be able to achieve.

The module in particular has encouraged me to look outside the box when researching and to carry out much more in depth research by crossing a variety of mediums and by not always opting for the most obvious. In this project alone, I think I have done more in depth research than I ever did last year. I started off by actually visiting places to get first hand primary research on pricing and then this leading to doing two questionnaires based on the research that I had found. However I feel I could of found much more primary research when documenting my colour for print work, instead of opting for the obvious and simply photocopying books from the library and from at home. With this I should of collected more examples of the different print processes and explain each process in far more depth than I have covered.
I feel like I started out my research confidently & with good intentions but it slid back after a period, resulting into poor research into the print processes and stock.

Despite this, I feel though I have still learnt a great deal about print production, the processes and the consideration you need to make when designing for print. As I knew nothing about print before – and I simply though a printer was a printer and that’s all what print involved, so this was a huge eye opening in understanding how colour worked.

The workshops which we had were very beneficial, as a result I feel much more confident in using different departments and machinery on my own- it has encourage me to broaden my methods of printing compared to last year when I only ever printed on a scale of A3 paper.

Using screen-printing as one of print processes in this brief, also allowed me to explore it and as a result I now will always be able to use it as a print method. It has been something which I have always wanted to do and has encourage me to print my own t-shirt etc with my designs as side projects – as it is so simple and easy to do.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
For me this is realising that if I want to get work done productively I should use the facilities at college as much as I can. For the past 2-3 weeks I have been staying late at college to work on the ‘GOOD’ brief, after doing this I have seen how much more work I can produce in this environment compared to when I am working from home.

A big problem, which I encountered, was wasting my money in digital print. I have a tendency to rush into work without pre planning and reassuring that everything is in place before finally printing. This occurred when printing my final packaging cover and A2 design boards in full colour not realising that they were not aligned right or there were spelling mistakes. I learnt form this to always print off my work to scale to check its proportions and proof read it, to try and find spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

I know also know that when I get a new brief to not leave it for a few days, but to get straight into it and start researching – as you can never have too much research, and I have also found that some of the best ideas simply come through this development and playing around with all the research which you have found.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I am very pleased with my final lads mag style packaging and the inside information. I feel the colours work well together with the overall layout – creating the busy, jam packed, bold font, crude lads mag vibe. A few people have even come up to me and asked if it was an actual magazine, which I had found which I found very promising. I also feel that my illustrator skills have progressed enormously compared to the level, which I was ask last year, I’m constantly picking up on new skills and am ever growing more confident in it.
Similarly with In design, I was new to this last year and hadn’t touched it since. My skills are still slowly growing in this programme but I found myself finding it much more easier when discovering the relevant shortcuts to use in it & the grids to line my text and imagery up.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
Time management and organisation has been my biggest weakness in this project. I feel very let down by the overall presentation and research into this project. I started out with good intentions and by the end of this module; I was rushing to complete it all in time. As a result I know that some of the standard of work within it is not my best, and I am capable of much better and I should have dealt with these areas before rushing at the deadline.
I do not think that my work shows a clear development of my ideas as my pack developed, what was going where, why and how? I rushed into these ideas with some of them not writing them down or recording them effectively.
To hep solve this, I am going to on the new module and further projects make weekly target plans in which I will stick in what I need to do by the end of each week. Instead of putting off work until there is pressure, I will start ahead when it is actually set and carry on from there. By the end of this project my bedroom at home was a mess, and you could not even see the floor – this obviously didn’t help me at all in try to start work and keeping my work organized and together. This is a problem that I really need to work on as it is making me behind.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
Plan ahead, and produce weekly targets to meet resulting in better time management & more work getting done without rushing.
Research fully, produce radical research and exploit it fully, leading to better concepts and information/understanding about my product or audience etc.
Proof read everything that I need to print for final pieces to spot spelling mistakes.
Use the college opening and closing hours more, as I now know that I get more work done here.
Start the project when it is given to us, don’t just leave it until a few weeks in.

I like this layout and the girl used within the cover, howerever she is a well known I am told page 3 girl and this is not what I want. I wanted to use a girl who was new and had the feel of a girl next door. Sje would be assecsable to males - if they went out, they could actually meet her and take her home.

This is the the design which I chose to take further and use for the final cover. The girl looks the most natural and everyday looking and it wearing some clothing which makes her seem even more attanable.

Spot colours can also be a selected area of colour on an image known as a spot of colour. This is mainly used on black and white imagery to draw attention to a particular area or make a statement. These types of spot colours are used more in an artistic way & aestheticla photography. Here are some examples below:

Spot colour. Here are examples of how spot colours are put into action - the image belwocme has used two spot colours form the swatch list above. It has used the a pantone shade of pink, Pantone solid coated 1905 C and red Pantone 185 C to create the bright colours within the image.

Colour Processes

Research into the six colour processes:

CMYK is shorthand for the colors cyan, magenta, yellow and key line black, each letter is pronounced separately. They are known together as the four color process or simply process color. CMYK works by chemically mixing the four colors together and by doing this it allows almost any color in the spectrum to be achieved.
This color model is worldwide and predominantly used the most in modern day industry offset printing (lithography). This print process works on a very simple principle, thank ink and water do not mix.
The images or text are put on plates, and each color has its own separate plate. These are first dampened by water then the colored by the ink, as a result the ink sticks to where the text and image is and the water to the area surrounding it. This image is then transferred to a rubber blanket on a roller and then finally onto paper. Hence it is called ‘offset’ as the image never goes directly onto the paper.
Each color plate is then printed precisely on top of one another on the paper to allow the colors to combine and build up the layers to form the final full color image. Cyan is the first plate and color to be printed then magenta, yellow and finally black which gives the extra details and deeper tones within the final image.
Black is added to the process as the black produced my mixing only CMY primaries will only give a dark muddy brown. Also using 100% CMY in the areas which is needed t produce black will build up and because of their concentration bleed and the image could loose sharp edges especially in text, and simply providing a black ink is cheaper.
The CMYK model works by using tiny drops of pigment (also known as halftones or screening), which allows less than the full saturation of the CMY primary colors. These tiny dots of ink are too small for the human eye to see on its own so when we look at an image we cannot see the overlapping dots, and we see just one color. Without using this process we would only be able to produce six colors; Cyan, magenta, yellow and their complentory color red, green and blue. So halftone gives us a full continuous range of color to work from.
CMYK is known as a subtractive process as it partially or fully masks certain colors. It takes away the natural light and white pigment of the paper, and means the more ink on the paper the darker the image will be.
One of the other predominate used screen based color systems is RGB. This color model has a much wider gamut and as result has much brighter, vivid colors. It is an additive color space as the more light on screen, the brighter the image will be. This is why for CMYK it is hard to match some colors produced by RBG, because it has a much smaller gamut. Though it puts up a good fight and does its best.

RGB

Apart from CMYK the other main way to mix colour in the design world is using the RGB colour model.
Its stands for the primary colours of light Red, Green and Blue, used to produce all on screen colours for the display of images in electronic systems, for example televisions, computers and mobile phones.

It is an additive colour model in which each colour, Red, Green and Blue light are added together in a variety of ways and intensity’s from being fully on or fully off in order to produce wide colour spectrum. The basic principle is, the more light there is on screen the brighter and vivid the RGB colour will be.

Changing the Hue and Saturation in two of the three colour channels it results in making one of secondary colours in CMY. For example, Cyan is made by mixing Green + Blue of equal intensity, Magenta is made by Red + Blue and Yellow is made by Red + blue. Each Secondary colour is the compliment of one primary colour (RGB), when a primary is mixed with its complimentary secondary colour, then white is produced.

However RGB’s colour’s is device dependant, which means different devices will recreate a given RGB value differently, leading to a change in colour matches. So a RGB value is not the same across devices and you should not expect the same result unless there is a form of colour management, which will try, and balance/match the RGB value.

This causes a problem when it comes to printing, as it is an additive colour space is means it has a much larger gamut than CMYK and most inkjet and laser printers print in this colour mode.
There is no simple or easy conversion to change the colours apart from using a colour management system that is mentioned above. It results in most colours printed becoming darker, though some can be closely matched in CMYK. Another reason to explain why the colours differ when converting RGB into CMYK is that, on screen RGB uses pixels per inch (these are tiny and millions can be packed into one single inch). Where as CMYK prints in dots per inch, these are a considerably bigger resulting in reducing detail and the brightness of colour.
Spot Colour
A spot colour is any colour that can be printed in a single run. They are printed using offset printers, and the colours can be any colour, mixed or pure. Predominantly offset printing uses process colour, which are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black to produce the final image normally where continuous tones (as in photographs) are required. However it can also use pre mixed inks, which within the industry are known as the true spot colours. Any colour generated by non-standard offset printer ink is one, for example; fluorescent colours, metallic and even glitter colours. As the inks are specially pre mixed it allows colours to be printed out at any time and out of the CMYK gamut range. A lot of these colours have much higher vibrancy and hard to replicate without using spot colours.
The standard industry-referencing guide to spot colours is Pantone®. It is the main company in the UK for digitizing and colour matching spot colours, with over 1000 swatches available. It allows each colour to have a name and serial number, so once typed in you have the exact same ink colour, as it is ready-mixed to produce a particular colour.

Duotones
A duotone is an image of a continuous tone, printed in only two colours/spot colours. These colours can be absolutely any colour and the duotone effect is made by separate greyscales of the different colour tones combined. It was traditionally used in photography before digital came along to make the black and white prints more exciting and have more of a visual impact –using sepia tones (muddy brown/copper colours) and blueprint tones (deep blue tones).

However in this digital age duotones are now used to create an eye catching more textured piece. This is aided by changing the hue and saturation on one or both colour – making the tones within the image brighter almost till it is hard to look at or till the image is very subtle and sophisticated.

Duotone printing only uses two plates, one for each colour. So as a result is much cheaper to print than a standard process colour in offset printing, which uses four. This could work for your advantage and save a lot of money.

Greyscale

Greyscale images hold the continuous tones of black and white and any colour in-between. A grey scale is distinctly different form black and white images, which only use two colours in them: black and white, these are particularly used in gaming imagery.
A digital greyscale image has set values/weights of colour within the greyscale range depending on the luminously of the image. These range from 0% being black to 100%, which is pure white. When converting a colour image to greyscale, the computer try’s to match the values to the luminously of the colour image using the RGB channels and converts them into there equivalent shade of grey. Some greyscale images are also know as monochromatic, these are images of neutral colours and their colour range only consists of one single colour.
Monotone
A monotone image only uses a single colour in it and the any tones of that colour. You can vary the intensity of the colour and tones by altering the hue and saturation within the image. Also depending on what stock you chose to print on –this will also alter the single colour and printed tones. Monochrome printing goes way back to the early century’s when it was very popular – artists used to paint with black or brown inks and dilute them to get the shades in between to paint realistic monotone pictures.
It is less used today as the digital age has sweep over but it is still popular within wet photography, using tones such a sepia and blueprint tones to create the monotone effect.

We were asked to design the poster to go inside Dont Panic's December issuse, the title was Machine. My deisgn was based on a mobile phone, and how we as a society view them as essential & how the majority of people opt to talk over text or over the phone rather than direct face to face communication - which can demean the conversation. My entry design is below:
Since I am using the theme of 'freshly washed sheets' for my GOOD project, I saw this advert and thought it was appropriate. I like how light and airy the sheets are, bright white and perfectly clean, I want to try represent this through my own work that freshly washed sheets are all of these. Hungrey Bears in a organisation form my home town of Bedford, it promotes gigs and events in one of the nightclubs and main music venue, before this Bedford had nilche of new upcoming music and good club nights! Chris Smith is one of the dj's at the club, 'The Pad' and is currenlty working for Bedfordshire council on their graphic design team. These are some of his poster designs for Hungrey Bears, he has a very distinct cartoon style using straight lined drawing skills making them hevily vectorized and bold, also using dynamtic eye catching colours and use of text. Here are some of my favrouits:

I personally love Roper's work. it combines mixed media, mainly photography digitally enhanced and composed with illustrations. On top of some of these compositions is type, this has become much more prominate within his later works. He studied at Buckingham shire college doing graphic design and now has become globally established as a graphic designer. His work has appeared in many books and magazines, including, 'It's a Matter of Illustration' by Victionary, 'Thousand Type Treatments' by Rockport, 'Typographics' by Rotovision and a major feature in the Japanese design magazine.
The thing which grabs me about his work, is the clustered layered of block colours, messy style which his work holds, yet at the same time there is clear precision and looking up close each line in immaculate. Recently he has worked with fellow designer Si Scott, and you can see a clear resemblance now between each others work which is now mainly illustration and heavily pixilated darkened imagery playing around with thershhold.

'Sigh' Scott

Si scott is a current designer in the lime light at the moment. He leaft school at 16 and then started at foundation course in Leeds at the college or art and design, Since then his work became noticed and now darts all over the country on business for clinets. Wat makes his work really stand out is his use with tpyography, producing some really innovative type.
He starts with rough sketches trialing layouts and picking at fonts, slighty altering them/changing them. Then he brings fineliners to the piece to bring it to life wiht his flowing, loose but highly intricque illistartions. Scott works on a much larger scale then the actual final image size, he draws it out then scans the illistations in at 1000dpi at 125% so when it is decreased to the actual size it is very crisp and clean looking image.

The simplicity of this piece of type is how each word interlinks with the subject matter of graphic design, with objects commonly used, simply printed in heavy bold black font against a white background, in my opinion very effective.

With this piece it is how the font is overlayed over one another and is still readable, though it is a thin typeface so minimastic at the same time which adds to the effect.

The work which i have found was mainly typography and layout driven which have caught my eye.

Freelance fashion illistartor and phototgrapher, i discovered her work through flickr. I like her use of mix media and combining the theme of my current project sewing styles in corperted within mixed media and water colour. Her loose style of sketching and outlines of the figures matched the looseness of the colour she has used, it dose not fit with in the outlines.

Sandrine Pelletier

Sandrine Pelletier, adds a whimsical twist to her subject matter. She is a 29 year old graphic designer and visual artist lives and works between Lausanne, Switzerland and Paris, France. She graduated from the Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ECAL).

It is not simple coincidence that Pelletiers work explores illistartion and the juxtaposition of archaic media usage and the subject matter being of cultural post-modernity. She was an ex-heavy metal fan and handles her medium of embroidery and crochet perfectly still allowing her music influence to shown through inparts. "Will fight for a dream", is one of her most famous projects and is a sociological coverage about Tribal/gang Violence and street culture in England, where she was previously living for some time. It is a series of embroideries depicting young people from a 'council estate' background, organizing events such as wrestling matches from their parents backyard. All her works have an embedded poignat twist or messgae which she wanta to convey to the reader, when on a glnace her work appears very nice and pleasent, it is only when you look twice you see the hidden detail. I particualty like her style, similary wiht Bowley combining stitching wiht mixed media.

Eleanor Bowley

Bowley is an illistartor, with her unique style of creating images from stitching and trimmings on recycled fabrics, she was commissioned as part of her final year project to design a range of clothes sold within the Urban Renewal area of Urban Outfitters. Her style is very distinctive, i think wha draws me to her work is the delicassy wihtin her lines and stitching which is contrasted wiht block colour or fabric.

This was my 1950's calender project. I had to design a calender to suit the year 1950 considering the key events, colours, type and format and stock. Ideally i would of like to print on an even lighter stock, to add a more newspaper type of effect, however i am still pleased wiht my final results.

I found these bundle of holiday snaps when i was back at home over easter. There of my dad and one of his old best friends, if was really funny seeing my dad so slender with a curly mass of hair, haha he changed alot when he was older and i knew him! I really liked seeing them as i didnt know that my dad was such a traveller, but on the back of each of these photographs is the date and the location, they were taken in 1973. What caught my eye in the first place to pick them up and look at them, was the packaging. Pictured below, it was vibrant pastely colours, depicting a beach holiday typical of the 1970's everyone smiling and happy!

From our final book presention last friday, most people commented as to why my developing work was in colour, highly contrasted similar to Martin Parrs - as to why the final books were in black and white, This was partly due to cost as it would of doubbbbled the price of the printing and i wanted to book to look clean cut, smart and move away from a younger audeince which these types of books are nromally associated with. Another reason was that with balck and white is allowed the skin tones to match up alot easier, to make the ne cropped much more realistic and bealivable.

However form this i have decided to make one more book in colour, to see if asethically the piece works better, here are the expresstions before i make the book...

I can remember seeing his works at christmas time 2007, he had designed a series of display windwos for Libertys in London. I recall walking past and stopping to look closer at the display, i didnt know who he was then even though i recongnised his style, so after researching i found out the designers name was Rob Ryan. His style uses sometimes simple other times complex screenprints, on white backgrounds using coloured inks normally. He combines typography wihtin objects or borders which he has creted using thick bold lines. His typography, hand drawn style is distincitvly recohnisable, capitals with filled in centres in letters.

About The Diary Project, it is by a young designer caller Kirsty Hall.
The Diary Project is a year long art project. Every day in 2007 she is drawing on an envelope, placing something secret inside and posting it to myself before midnight each day. When the envelopes returnerd to her they stayed unopened until they could be exhibited as a whole artwork. Then members of the public will then be able to open the letters and investigate the contents.

Dolce and gabbana

Dolce and gabbana last summer 2007 did a range of clothing focused on simple dresses, trousers and tops splattered with pastel shades and multi coloured tones of paint. It made the clothes look like old paint overalls which you could find in your own cupboards at home! Instead of paying the huge prices Dolce and gabbana charge you could even make your own if you didn't have any old paint ridden clothes, all you need is paint!

The 21 year old works I find fascinating, its eye grabbing and combines the elements of mixed media which i love using within my work. he is mainly known as an illustrator, with a loose hand rushed style of drawing his work look like they belong on pieces of scrap paper. This is what i find so effective, as he combine these drawings with parts of colour or minor detail and thickly italic thin font making the image beautiful and interesting to read.

Foals!! 2007

I went to see the foals way way back in September after just coming to uni. I had seen them before at Reading festival and they were amazing, but not in such a small venue as where i saw them in Leeds. They were just at that breaking point when they played at the cockpit still fairly underground. There set was fuelled with energetic frantic dance movements and beats, with the lead singer Yantis dancing in a similar way to Ian Curtis. There was such an electric, crazed atmosphere.
I cannot express how gutted i was for not taking my camera with me to the gig, i was worried in case it would get hit or dropped during their set, instead i took some shitty blurred photos on my phone and a video. It was still possible one of the best gigs i have ever been too.
However what first attracted me to Foals, was my friend Craig showing me samples of there demo art work for the single Hummer. It was very in intricate in parts, also with rough textures by mixed media and illustration. They are designed by a 21 year old illustrator from Brighton called, Tinhead. because his art work has been so influential on the band, he had been described as The sixth Foal. I saw the film 'Factory Girl' yesterday and i previously didnt know much at all about Edi Sedgewick but aftr watching this it sparked an intrest. I love these photographs down below mianly because of the framming and high contrast of colour.

Today the Young Knives did an instore perfromance in JUmbo Records. It was pretty much a secret gig as they forgot to advertise it until 3.00pm on the day when they were due to play at 4.30pm. These photos are images which i took for my last moduale representing the obsesstion and controlling sense which body image and weight can cause. I wanted the photos to show the distress and aggitation of the individual, as though she was trying to cut the body fat out of her with the ripples and cruves in her own body. the orginal idea was the start with a single photo of the girl measuring herself lossley, barely touching the skin, then progresstion into her almost cutting into herself. The photos are shocking and disturbing, this personally i think is the best way if you are wanting to provoke a reaction from the veiwer.

Born 1964, Brunnen, Switzerland. Ugo Rondinone's work has been evolving since the mid-1980s, and his works take shape through several media--drawing, painting, video and installations.

In the series titled "I don’t live here anymore",1995, Ugo Rondinone started to digitally manipulate photos of women depicted in various suggestive poses, replacing their features with his own in a sufficiently consistent way for the image to retain its erotic content, and so its hardly noticable unless you study it. By slipping into different bodies, he tests his own body and appearance, and he raises the issue of reality. The artist can only offer his own, man-made version. His later works within this title involes imiages of himself, manipulates in such a way to produce two diffrent identies, they are diffrent but clearly the same person.

Southbank Centre visit 2008-Ghazel

In the Febuary reading week i took a visit to London's Southbank centre. I went specificly to see The Haywards current exhibition called, 'Laughing in a Foreign Language'. It investigates the whole spectrum of humour, from jokes, gags and slapstick to irony and satire, exploring juts how much humour is used as a role in contemporary art.
It prompts the viewer to use humour as a reaction to the unfamilar or the unconfrotable, something which we are not quite sure how to respond too, as well as questioning what it means to share a sense of humour and what it is that makes an individual laugh.

Ghazel's work is about identity. The 'Me' films are autobiographical; directly inspired from her everyday life and observations. She lives her life and then lives it again in front of the camera allowing others to see.

She was born and initially based in Iran and currently based in Paris; as part of her work, she juxtaposes eastern and western elements that form her sense of self. Dealing with feelings of being both an insider and outsider in the East and West she creates work which refers to her nomadic status; wandering from home to home.

'My films are like home movies and are filmed with a consumer model Hi-8 camera placed on a tripod. I film; I act and I edit. I play with reality and fiction. This work is an obsessive work – and my life and films are one. All the paradoxes that make me: make my Me films; and my films are my parallel life.' Ghazel

Her most recent exhibient which was the one i saw at the southbank centre is called 'Wanted'. It is influcned when in 1997 French Immigration Office denied her the permit of stay and asked her to leave France, being of Iranian origin, did not peacefully wait further, in any case unfavorable, development of events. In her own way she met the challenge so typical for lives and fate of multimillion population of dislocated. She made an announcement and printed the poster where, beside obligatory photo of herself, the following text was printed:

"URGENT, Woman, 33, artist of Middle Eastern origin and WP (without permit) seeks a husband, from EU, preferably France, contact e-mail ..." and so forth.

"My work is about the foreigner's position in the West and the foreigner's position in Iran" - says Ghazel and continues: "My films are like a home video, through images I document my life, my reflections, impressions, thoughts, fears, remembrances, wishes, experiences, my present, past and future, my emotions, hopes and desires, my energy and complexes, paradoxes, my personality and my dreams, my recollections and my memory. They are my parallel life."

She is trying to demonstrate to Western cultures that she is not alone. Her population counts many millions and whether world wants it or not, it has to come to peace with this fact. The sooner, the better.

Sixties underground magazine Oz (cover of issue one above) has a legendary place in magazine history, both for it’s establishment-shaking attitude and its radical aestheic inovation of graphic design and layout. It did not follow the codes and conventions of the norm and which were socially accepted, this is probally why the magazine didnt overall have huge succsess.

We breifly looked at Chris Buden today in critcal studies. In the context of being Avant Garde. It represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is culturally accepted by the norm in society. It was seen as the hallmark of modernsim, as distinct from postmodernism. Post modernisits claim that Avant Garde is no longer a part of post moderism, with its constant pushing of the bounderies and wlamost wantin to shock its audience each time.

Burden's reputation as a performance artist started to grow in the early 1970s after he made a series of controversial performances in which the idea of personal danger as artistic expression was central.

Investigating the psychological experience of personal danger and physical risk, he used his own body as an art object in outrageous, sometimes shocking acts, aggressively confronting the artist/audience relationship and the artmaking process.

'The Outdoor Type'

This has to be one of my faviote songs of all time, it reminds me of when i was 15, The Lemonheads was one of the first bands I got into within that genre, folk country acusutic lead by Evan Dando. This song acts as motivation to me and moves me, i hadent heard it in agges till a few minuets ago, my itune was on shuffle and this popped on!

This is a recording of the song covered by Frank Turner whom i am also a fan of. i have seen him four times now in pubs in and bedfordshire and cambridge and he never has yet failed to play this song.

High Royds Lunatic Asylum Menston Yorkshire

One of the secrity guards at liberty park used to work here, he said it was a very surreal part of his life. High Royds was a lunatic asylum from 8 October 1888, which closed down in February 2003.

This promted my flatmates Holly and Vo to do a photography shoot there, as there title for there current project was surrealism and can the camera ever lie. We made a day trip of it, it is located in Menston en route to Bradford. It was easy to get in, there were broken windows so we climbed through one of them. All corridors were deserted, darkly light, yet all in perfect condition - magnificent wallpaper and high rised pattern ceilings and brass plated doors, it almost seemed too precious to have been abandonded.

David Shrigley?

He's a great artist who makes twisted lo-fi drawings, sculptures and other bits. They're often amusing but can also be dark and difficult. He lives in Glasgow where he went to art school. Although he has worked with various media, most of his work is in the form of mordantly humorous cartoons released in softcover books or postcard packs.

Shrigley's work has two of the characteristics often encountered in outsider art - an odd viewpoint, and (in some of his work) a deliberately limited technique. His freehand line is often weak, which jars with his frequent use of a ruler; his forms are often very crude; and annotations in his drawings are poorly executed and frequently contain crossings-out (In authentic outsider art, the artist has no choice but to produce work in his or her own way, even if that work is unconventional in content and inept in execution.
In contrast, it is likely that Shrigley has chosen his style and range of subject matter for comic effect).

Moross is fast becoming one of the most prolific young illustrators and designers to rise out of UK , and shes only 21!!

With a career that began by creating flyers for London clubs and innovative bands such as The Klaxons and The Mystery Jets, Kate's love of art and music has at last developed into a collaboration with fashion through the launch of her capsule collection of printed t-shirts, vests and hoodies designed exclusively for Topshop.
Playing on her physics background, Kate's hand-drawn motif prints see structured spatial shapes intertwine with astrophysical typography, and the result; a phychadelic trip on a tee is her current promotion work with Topshop.

Started working for the folks of the music scene in london 3 years ago and has continued from there. She has been perfecting the art of hand drawn flyers, and heavily geometric graphics. she has a very strong right hand for a passion for drawing, her slighty angeled favouring for staright line drawings hold a simple yet bold quality of line.

Moross has recenly also set up her own re-branding recorde label called, Isomorphs Records. It involves her taking current music and repackaging it as limited edition art vinyls or cd's. Focusing on the aesthetics of each record and working with bands to create the perfect collabortaion. For collectors, art and muisc lovers alike.

Postmortum Bliss.
In homage to Rebel Without A Cause, Sigismondi recasts Nicholas Ray's portrayal of the turbulence and pain of adolescence in a modern light. Today, institutions and their educators often diagnose these pains and confusions as a mental disorder. Postmortem Bliss is a film about the over-medicated, addicted, and misdiagnosed generation of today.
I have always been a huge fan of her work, and she has a very distinstive reconginsable style to go wiht her works. Apart from her art exhibitions, she is best known for directing music videos for The Tea Party, Interpol, Incubus, Christina Aguilera, Muse, Billy Talent, The White Stripes, Sigur Rós, Sheryl Crow, The Cure, Björk, Amon Tobin, Marilyn Manson, Living Things and David Bowie. Her trademark dilating, jittery camerawork, noticeable as early as her video for Manson's The Beautiful People, has been replicated by a great number of directors since.
In her childhood she became obsessed by drawing and painting.When she took a photography course, she became obsessed once more, and graduated with a photography major.

Floria Sigismondi started a career as a fashion photographer. She came to directing music videos when she was approached by the production company The Revolver Film Co., and directed music videos for a number of Canadian bands. Her very innovative, but also very disturbing video works, located in sceneries she once described as "entropic underworlds inhabited by tortured souls and omnipotent beings", attracted a number of very prominent musicians.
She creates a hyper-surrealism based on the figure, using images derived from hallucinatory dream-states. Her videos mix seamlessly with her photography series, and her photographic images translate naturally into mixed-media forms. Sigismondi's images exist in a theatre setting that is both narrative and starkly visual, revealing the poetic and sometimes macabre world.

She explores the effects of science on our contemporary experience of the body and describes an undefined possibility for the future; with our current advances in biotechnology, it poses a possibility that is frightening, complex, mysterious and compelling.

Taken on my Digital photography workshop, though instead we started to work on wet photography. I previosuly did photography for one of my A Levels, and i manily wored with wet imagery. So to me this was a real treat to go back to the dark room and have a recap and get back into it, i used to literally be obsessed with my photography when i was doing my A Levels and spend most of not all my free time in the schools rather small cramped darkroom.
Anywho this session reminded me what i was missing since now my work is mainy digital based, reminding me of the satistsfacting of watching the developement of your own prints.

We were given a day project breif, my question was, 'What is beauty?' and we had to come up with the answer and present it wihtin a photograph by 3.00pm. I wanted to represent the society within we live in current obsession wiht looking good, this lead me onto plastic surgery and what we do, our rituals and time wasting into what we percive, 'looking'.

Martin Parr is typically known as a documentory photographer. His photographic projects take a critical look at modern society, specifically consumerism, foreign travel and tourism, motoring, family and relationships, and food. His photos are eye catching and often of high saturated colour and taken using macro lenses and ring flash to add to the contrast. The pignoit approuch Parr gives leaves the viewer not knowing weather to laugh or cry.

David Hockney

David Hockney was a born in braford and became involved as a painter form an early age. His later works revole around photography, (photomontaging, which he called 'joiners') using standard photo lab film rolls and varying numbers (~5-150) of small Polaroid snaps of a single subject Hockney arranged a patchwork to make a composite image. Hockney arrugued that becuase the photos were taken from different perspectives and at slightly different times, it can start to show how the human vision works. As a result his work has an affinity with Cubism, an affinity which was one of Hockney's major aims. He was trying to create a sense of time and space around the subject by asking the subject to move whilst he was photographing so that the movements of the subject seen from the photographer's perspective and recorded.

Banksy is a well-known yet still remains anonymous. He works at speeds using stencils and has a most recgnisable style within his graffiti and street art. His artworks are often satirical pieces of art which encompass topics from politics, culture, and ethics and are directed to envoke a reaction at society and the difrent classes within it.

This is from Rankin's 'Me,me,me' collection and i think perosnally one of his best. i have always been intressting in his work, and this particular collection differs and stands out from the rest.
Rankin is a photographer, publisher (joint founder of Dazed and Confused magazine) and recently film director. His divercity of work can not be placed into any one catergory. Rankin is known for never being shied from portaying difficult subject matters, adressing issues from domestic vioence to bodyshape and womens insecuritys.
